Online passport application
The passport application can be made online by visiting the official Passport Seva website. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has now completed all passport applications online. Therefore, if you want to renew or apply for a new passport, you will need to go through the online application process.
How to apply for a passport online?
When looking to apply for a passport online, there are certain steps an applicant must follow. The steps involved are described in detail below:
Step 1: Login to Passport Seva
- Visit the official Passport Seva website & Click on the “APPLY” section.
- If you are an existing user, you can log in using the user ID and password.
- If you are a new user, you will need to register and create an account. Follow the steps below to register:
- Click “Register Now” under the “New User” tab.
- Enter the login ID and password. Enter the captcha code and click on “Register”.
Step 2: Choose the type of application
After logging in, you will need to choose the relevant service from the options offered. You can choose to apply for a:
- New passport / reissue of passport
- Diplomatic passport / official passport
- Police attestation certificate (PCC)
- Identity certificate
Step 3: Complete the application form
Completing the application form can be done online or offline. To complete the offline application form, follow the steps below:
- Click on the link provided to download the electronic version of the application form.
- A link to an electronic copy of the following forms will be displayed. Download the corresponding form according to your type of application:
- Fee / reissue
- Police certificate
- Diplomatic / Official
- Identity certificate
- Complete the electronic application form and click on the “Download electronic form” link.
- Download the completed application form.
You can also complete the online application form and submit it. You can also partially complete the form and complete the process at a later date. It is advisable to check the form once before submitting it.
Step 4: Schedule, pay and book the appointment
After completing and submitting the form, you will need to make an appointment with your Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or the relevant passport authority. You can make an appointment as indicated below:
- Go to the “Candidate Home” page and click on “View saved / submitted applications”.
- Details of the submitted application form will be displayed. Choose the ARN of the form you submitted.
- Click on the option “Pay and schedule an appointment” among those provided.
- Then choose the payment method among the two offered, viz. Online payment and Challan payment.
Note: If you are paying for Tatkaal appointments, the online fee is the same as the regular passport fee. The balance is to be paid to the PSK on the day of the appointment.
If you pay online, you can proceed to booking an appointment immediately. If you choose to pay via Challan, you will need to do the following:
- Bring the challan to an SBI branch and pay the required amount in cash. (Note: this can only be done after 3 hours of challan generation, which is valid for 85 days.)
- Then collect a copy of the challan from the staff at the receiving bank.
- The bank takes 2 days to verify the RNA details provided on the challan.
- Successful payment of fees will be displayed on the website after verification, where the requester can “track payment status”. An update email is also sent.
- Appointment planning
On the “Pay and schedule an appointment” page, select the PSK of your choice.
Choose a time slot that suits you from the available dates mentioned. There, the applicant is required to select a PSK based on the available date.
- Confirm your meeting time by entering the CAPTCHA code.
- Then select “Pay and book the appointment”
- The details of the request such as ARN, name, type of request, amount to pay, contact number and date of appointment will be displayed.
- If you have chosen to pay online, you will be redirected to the payment gateway.
Once payment has been made, you will receive a confirmation of the appointment and an appointment number. An SMS with the details will also be sent. Print a copy of the receipt of the claim. All PSKs now also accept SMS for proof of appointment.
In the event that multiple payments are made for the same appointment / request / ARN, the excess amount will be refunded by the RPO. The passport appointment can be rescheduled twice within one year from the date of the initial appointment. However, if you miss the appointment, you cannot reschedule the appointment.
How to Apply for Diplomatic Passport / Official Passport Online
Diplomatic or official passports are issued to persons who hold diplomatic status or who are delegated by the Indian government to travel abroad on official mission. This document can also be used as proof of address and identity. Applications for diplomatic and official passports are normally only processed at the Consular, Passport and Visa Division (CPV), Patiala House, New Delhi. However, you can also choose to apply at the passport office attached to the applicant’s current address.
The pointers mentioned below will help guide applicants who wish to apply for an official or diplomatic passport online –
- Visit the official Passport Seva Kendra website and click on the “Register Now” link.
In doing so, they will be given an ID which must be used to log into the Passport Seva online portal. - Applicants should then click on the link titled “Apply for a Diplomatic Passport”.
- After that, the necessary form should be downloaded, completed and submitted along with the required documentary evidence.
- Then, the printing of the completed request must be done via the link “View / print the submitted form” which is available on the “View saved / submitted requests” page.
- This printed copy of the online application form should be brought to the Passport and Consular Visa Division, Patiala House at the New Delhi Passport Office, along with the required original documents attached to the current address and submit the application.

There you can click on the “Cancel” option to cancel your passport application.
