When does The Apprentice start in 2024? Why show has been delayed this year

A new year normally brings a new batch of entrepreneurs hungry for their big moment in the boardroom and a chance to become Lord Sugar’s next apprentice.

Long-running BBC show The Apprentice has been a staple of the start of the televisual year, kicking off in January for the past few years.

But this month it has been missing from the schedule even though an 18th season has been confirmed.

Here’s what we know about a new series of The Apprentice.

Is there another series of The Apprentice?

The reality gameshow The Apprentice has been running since 2005, pitting 18 young would-be business people against each other in a series of challenges in an effort to impress Lord Alan Sugar and win an opportunity to kick-start their careers.

A self-made billionaire, Lord Sugar started out in business with his electronics firm Amstrad which he sold to BskyB in 2007.

He has previously been chairman and part-owner of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, became a member of the House of Lords in 2009 and has been “enterprise tsar” for the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.

As the continuous host of The Apprentice since 2005, he had been closely involved in the show from the start.

He confirmed to the Radio Times in January last year he had signed up with the BBC for a seasons 18 and 19 of the show and would be interested in 20th.

He said: “I have agreed to do two more series, which will bring me up to 19 and depending on how well that is received, and the BBC do their statistical numbers and all that, I’d be delighted to do a 20th.”

Lord Sugar, 76, will be joined by business executive Karren Brady and winner of the first series of The Apprentice Tim Campbell.

And the BBC has already launched the recruitment of possible candidates for season 19 before this year’s show has even been broadcast, with applications can be made online here by 28 January 2024.

It said the winning candidate will receive an investment of up to £250,000 and will go into a 50:50 business with Lord Sugar.

When will it start in 2024 and why was it delayed?

But when this year’s show will be aired has been left somewhat up in the air.

There has been speculation it will be starting in February after the second series of the Bafta-award-winning show The Traitors has finished its run this month.

The Daily Mail reported in November 2023 “The Traitors is returning for series two, and has taken The Apprentice’s January slot”.

But the BBC would not be drawn on the exact start date for the new season of The Apprentice or why it was not launching in January.

A BBC spokesperson told i: “The Apprentice will return in early 2024, schedules will be confirmed in due course.

“Schedules are always subject to change.”
