Beyond Paradise, the Death in Paradise spin-off that relocates from the Caribbean to the fictional harbour town of Shipton Abbott in Devon, will soon return for a second season.

Season one saw former Saint Marie detective, Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall), returning to Blighty to be with his fiancé, Martha (Not Going Out’s Sally Bretton), and joining the local police force.

Now, season two is almost here and fans of the show are keen to pick up where season one left off.

And with 8.7 million viewers watching season one’s first episode over its first month, the grey skies of England aren’t likely to keep away fans of the show.

Speaking about season two on The One Show, Marshall said: “We’ve got a murder on a steam train, a medium who predicts arson attacks – that’s quite a good one – a local fishing legend lost at sea. We’ve got loads of good stuff.”

Season two will premiere on Friday 22 March at 8pm on both BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with six instalments available to watch each week.

Beyond Paradise is set in the fictional town of Shipton Abbott, which is Martha’s hometown near the picturesque Devon coast.

Producers largely filmed across the border in Cornwall. Locations included Port Eliot, the Cornish fishing towns of Looe and Saltash, Bere Ferrers in West Devon, and in other areas down the Rame Peninsular.

Executive producer Tim Key said “Being a Death in Paradise show we knew it had to be set somewhere beautiful and, in the UK, we are spoilt for choice.

“There were lots of conversations about where we take it but we settled quite quickly on the West Country as we felt that Devon hadn’t had a huge amount of exposure in TV drama, Cornwall often nabs the glory.”

When looking for filming locations, Key explained that the team settled on Looe in Cornwall after travelling around the West Country looking for a town that felt like an authentic community and less like a resort.

He explained: “it was a beautiful tourist town, but also a thriving community with fishing businesses, so we felt we had found our home.

“The fictional town is set slightly back from the coast, so we have all sorts of story worlds to dive into, including the folklore of the town, which is touched upon in episode one. The series looks beautiful, and we were lucky with the weather as well!”

Kris Marshall said: “‘Shipton Abbott’ is such a wonderful location to call home for a while and it’s a delight to join up with my fellow police team for another batch of weird and wonderful cases, and to see what’s in store for Humphrey and Martha in the next chapter of their lives”.

Sally Bretton added: “Series one of Beyond Paradise was such a joy to be a part of and I’m ecstatic to have returned to what already feels like a second home in Shipton Abbott. I can’t wait for audiences to see what we have planned – the second series is set to be brilliant!”
