By India Today Web Desk: The T20 World Cup 2022 could not have asked for a better start as Round 1 offered plenty of thrills over the last one week. As many as 8 teams battled it out for 2 spots in the Super 12 and there was no dearth of surprises and brilliant performances.
At the end of 12 matches in Round 1, two-time World Champions West Indies were shown the door, marking the end of the Caribbean dominance in T20I cricket. Nicholas Pooran’s West Indies were knocked out after losing their final Round 1 match in Hobart on Friday. Notably, the West Indies were also beaten by Scotland and their only win in Group B of Round 1 came against Zimbabwe.
Eventually, Ireland and Zimbabwe qualified for the Super 12 from Group B. While Ireland finished second, Zimbabwe topped the group after comfortable victories over Ireland and Scotland. Zimbabwe progressed to the next round of a T20 World Cup tournament for the first time in their history.
On the other hand, Group A of Round 1 also saw plenty of action as Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka fought back from a shock defeat to Namibia to qualify for Super 12. Namibia, despite beating Sri Lanka, failed to qualify for the Super 12 stage as they lost to the UAE, handing CP Rizwan’s men their first-ever victory in a World Cup match.
UAE’s win over Namibia on the last matchday made sure Netherlands qualified for the Super 12 along with Sri Lanka from Group A.
Group A winners Sri Lanka and Group B runners-up Ireland progressed to Group 1 of Super 12 which has defending champions Australia, England, New Zealand and Afghanistan.
Group B winners Zimbabwe and Group A runners-up Netherlands progressed to Group 2 of Super 12 which has former champions, India and Pakistan, along with Bangladesh and South Africa.
