Pick of the day: The Tattooist of Auschwitz
9pm, Sky Atlantic
Jonathan Glazer’s chilling, Oscar-winning film The Zone Of Interest portrayed the home life of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss. This new six-part drama takes us back to the other side of the barbed-wire fence. It’s an adaptation of Heather Morris’s bestselling novel about the real Lali Sokolov (played by Jonah Hauer-King and, as his older self, by Harvey Keitel), a Slovakian Jewish inmate at the Auschwitz camp. He was given the job of tattooing numbers on fellow prisoners’ arms – and fell in love with a girl he was tattooing. Jonas Nay (Deutschland 83) plays the SS guard with whom Sokolov forms an increasingly trusting relationship.
Wildlife Rescue
8pm, Channel 4
In the latest visit to South Essex Animal Hospital, Rosie, the first orphaned fawn of the year, is soon joined by newborn Lily. Lily was abandoned by her mother before her instinct to suckle kicked in. Elsewhere, Lois the grey seal pup was malnourished when she arrived, having been attacked by a dog, and has refused to eat ever since. The lovely team here can sadly only keep Lois alive by force-feeding her.
Murder, They Hope
9pm, BBC Two
Paul Whitehouse makes a guest appearance in the latest episode of the sleuthing caper, while Miranda star Sarah Hadland continues her scene-stealing turn as Gemma’s sister, Monica. This week, Monica is starring in an am-dram production of Romeo and Juliet sponsored by the town’s local bakers. Unfortunately, somebody is poisoning the baker’s products…
Instagram’s Worst Con Artist
9pm, ITV1
“In a different universe she could have been a really good CEO,” someone says of Australian social media influencer and “cancer con woman” Belle Gibson. Not sure what this says about the mental make-up of CEOs, but Gibson’s story gets increasingly bizarre as her sorry tale continues. It seems that her “diagnosis” of brain cancer, which she supposedly cured with natural remedies, was pure fantasy of the cruellest kind – “profiting off a really vulnerable community”, as a former friend puts it. Having wiped her online footprint, Gibson reappeared in a video calling herself “Sanbontu” and claiming to have been adopted by Ethiopia’s Oromo community.
Taskmaster
9pm, Channel 4
Not sure about anybody else, but this latest series of Taskmaster isn’t quite doing it for me. It could be the mix of contestants or perhaps just that the format is beginning to grow stale (I sincerely hope not). Anyway, this week, Joanne McNally invents a new catchphrase, Nick Mohammed and Sophie Willan both struggle with a bottle of water, John Robins gets creative with beans, and Steve Pemberton is made to feel his age.
Joe and Katherine’s Bargain Holidays
10pm, Channel 4
Comedians and friends Joe Wilkinson and Katherine Ryan sample a low-cost family beach holiday at the Bulgarian resort of Sozopol (Ryan’s role being as the pampered, high-maintenance one of the pair). In a desperate attempt to make his companion smile, Wilkinson volunteers to do some nerve-wracking water sports, while together, they gallivant around the medieval town of Sozopol, dine in some old windmills, take a trip on a pirate ship, and relax in the spa.
